LOL! I was close! But I happen to know that the #1 song when I was born was "Deep Purlpe" by Larry Clinton and His Orchestra with vocalist Bea Wain. My mother and father bought a record of it, put it away, and gave it to me for my birthday when I got to be 13 years old. The record finally got too old and scratched up to play any more, but I loved the song and I still do.

Louie did it before that though!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLIrS5dtTZI&feature=related

True, Louie Armstrong sang Mack the Knife before Darrin, but he wasn't the first.

The song was originally written for the 1928 German musical Die Dreigroschenoper (known in English as The Threepenny Opera). It was composed by Kurt Weill for his wife, Lotte Lenya, who was the first to perform the song.

Bobby Darin's swinging version was the most popular in the US, but his presentation certainly doesn't reflect the song's dark subject matter of a thoroughly evil man who dispassionately commits rape, arson and murder.

I couldn't find a video of Lotte Lenya's original performance (it might not have been filmed), but the musical was filmed in 1930 with a man performing the song.
